Independent living facilities are just as the name suggests, centers for adults over 65, but are very self-sufficient. They are still healthy enough to take care of themselves, but want the community of others their same age. If you’ve never been to one, imagine an apartment complex with a club house, events, parties and other social things, but only for older adults. The differences are that the entire place is wheelchair accessible. That’s it. There’s not much else. Other than being senior friendly, there is no healthcare provided or care staff on call.

Assisted living facilities are a step farther in the care spectrum. Like independent living facilities, sometimes they are also apartment style complexes. More often, when larger complexes, they just have interior facing doors. That means long hallways more like a hotel. They still have separate rooms and a lot of similar activities and options. The difference is that they are for folks that need a little more care and can’t get along without help. Assisted living facilities are staffed with 24 hour care givers to help their residents with activities of daily living.

Skilled nursing facilities, sometimes known as nursing homes take the concept even farther. They provide a registered nurse on duty 24/7. They sometimes also provide rehabilitation services. These facilities are for folks who definitely require medical care for many of their needs.

Constant Care of Colorado Springs is an assisted living facility (ALF). The main thing that sets us apart from many other ALF’s is, instead of a large facility, we opted instead for a smaller, more family-like approach. Our residence is a small, quiet and comfortable home in one of our cities beautiful neighborhood. We’d love to show you just how nice it can be for you. Now, let’s take a look at what the state of Colorado requires for such facilities:

Because members of ALF’s do not require the level of medical care of a nursing home, many locations do not have round-the-clock nursing staff. This service would be more suited for retirement homes. Residents of assisted Living centers are generally a step up in their mobility. But still need help with at least one activity of daily living. They are typically senior citizens who do not require high levels of care, but prefer the companionship and assistance that these facilities provide.

There are a variety of facilities that meet these requirements set out by the state. They range from small, residential houses serving one resident to large hotel like complexes serving hundreds of residents. In most of these centers, people usually have their own private room or apartment at these centers. Some though, have shared, dorm-style rooms. There are also community living areas and dining facilities.

While these large-style apartments are very viable options, and may be the best option for some, Constant Care of Colorado Springs takes a different approach. Instead of a large building with long hallways and busy eating areas, ours is a small, family environment in a residential home on a quiet street in the Cheyenne Mountain area of the city. Our home has two floors with six rooms and two separate common areas. There are no long hallways and never any crowds.
